WEEK 13: Resilience in the Face of the Storm
...⋆✧⋆Welcome to My Online Diary⋆✧⋆...
Hi everyone! I'm Archie Salut, a 17-year-old Grade 12 student in the Excellence section. Welcome to my online diary! This year is starting with a mix of emotions, from feeling sad about failures and problems to being excited about new opportunities. Here, I'll share memorable moments with friends, the challenges I face, and the pr
ide in small victories. This blog is about my journey of ups and downs, laughter and tears, and everything that makes this year unforgettable. Welcome to my online diary!
This week has been unlike any other, a quiet yet heavy silence hanging over us as Typhoon Kristine battered our region. Classes were canceled the entire week, yet the disruption was far from an “extra vacation.” For many in Bicol, the storm left unimaginable destruction in its wake. Families faced gut-wrenching losses; homes were torn apart, livelihoods destroyed, and neighborhoods left unrecognizable. As I looked around at my own surroundings, I felt a mix of relief and sadness—relief for my family’s safety, and sadness for the countless others who lost so much. It's a humbling reminder that life can change in an instant and that, in such times, our community spirit is our greatest asset.
With no classes and the roads too dangerous to go out, I focused on preparing for the upcoming college entrance exam for the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP). Ironically, like everything else, the exam itself was affected by the storm, postponed to November 30. While it was disappointing, I’m grateful for the extra time to prepare and sharpen my skills. The situation has reminded me to stay adaptable, knowing that things don’t always go as planned. Meanwhile, I kept up with the assignments our teachers had sent, determined not to fall behind. This unexpected free time became a chance to buckle down, focus on my goals, and make the most of it.
One of our most significant projects this week was creating the script for our film teaser, "Flowers in the Crypt." Alongside my groupmates, I immersed myself in brainstorming and drafting a storyline that would capture the essence of our story in just a few powerful scenes. We carefully planned the flow of each scene to set the tone, with a haunting and mysterious atmosphere. Every detail had to align with the characters’ emotions—from their costumes to their expressions, as well as the settings and lighting we’ll use to bring the scenes to life.
The teaser’s goal is to spark curiosity, so we focused on key moments that would leave viewers wanting to know more, arranging scenes to show just enough of the storyline without giving too much away. We also discussed the symbolism behind each shot, ensuring every detail contributed to the film’s themes. From planning which settings to use to coordinating how each actor’s outfit would reflect their role in the story, this project required us to think deeply about how to bring out the full potential of every frame. Though challenging, it was rewarding to see our vision start to come together, and collaborating on this teaser brought our team closer as we worked toward a common goal.
Bible Verse for the Week:
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." – Psalm 46:1
This verse felt particularly comforting during such an uncertain time. Amid the devastation and disruptions caused by the storm, I found peace in remembering that God’s presence is constant. This week, my faith reminded me that while storms may shake the world around us, His guidance is unshakeable. Leaning on Him during times of trial strengthens my resolve and reminds me of the importance of resilience, patience, and compassion.
Reflecting on this week, I realize that resilience isn’t just about facing obstacles head-on; it’s about adapting, finding purpose, and remaining hopeful, even when things don’t go as planned. The week may have been quieter, but it was also a chance to strengthen my faith, appreciate the support of those around me, and give my best to the goals I have control over. As I look forward to the coming weeks, I’m grateful for the time to prepare, both academically and spiritually. I know that challenges will keep coming, but with faith and perseverance, I’m ready to take them on.
